Yoga and Pilates - aren't they the same?

Yoga and Pilates - aren't they the same?

Lots of people have said to me over the years things along the lines of 'oh yeah Pilates.... It's just like yoga!' to which I reply 'no, not really - there are some similarities in the actual movements but they come from a totally different 'space' - Pilates doesn't have a spiritual side to it, its primary purpose is about building strength and flexibility through control - yoga doesn't have that as the primary purpose (well at least my understanding of it).

But - Pilates and yoga go really well together! They focus on different aspects of the mind, body and dare I say.... Spirit.

I was originally taught Yoga Nidra in Kindergarten. I have practiced it in various settings throughout my life.

It's a great way to hone your body awareness - which is crucial for a focused and controlled Pilates technique.

There's a great little yoga studio in Kings Cross that is doing Yoga Nidra and meditation classes each Friday night 7.30pm. Check out Yoga Village in Kings Cross www.yogavillage.com.au and see you there!

ALP opens up preselection process to public

There are so many reasons to bag out the Australian Labor Party at the moment - however this is one thing I think they are doing right.
In the City of Sydney the ALP is opening up the preselection process to any voter in the electorate to choose the ALP candidate for Mayor. This means that people (probably Labor inclined supporters) can choose the candidate even if they are not a member of the ALP. Kind of like the primaries in the US but you don't have to be a registered Labor voter.
It's an interesting process and one I'm keen to support and keep a watch on. They are doing an online voting system. Cool hey?!
Check out candidate profiles and information about the process at www.communitypreselection.com
And - get out and vote if you are in the City of Sydney.

Qualified to teach Pilates

I have been practicing Pilates since 2007. I have had the privilege of being taught by instructors trained in New York - their precision has inspired me to become an instructor. I have recently qualified.

I am interested in working with people - in particular those who are looking to Pilates to recover from injury and create strength, enhance movement and flexibility.
